Day 1

Well, the sun will come up today as usual but other than that the world seems changed. I went to bed early after I knew Trump would lose Florida. Was up again around 2:30 and saw the final results and the news that Hillary had conceded. I watched Trump’s acceptance speech and was surprised by its straightforward nature and the lack of smugness. Never-the-less this does not change the fact that we now have a Republican president, house of reps and senate. All Dems lost in this state which was shocking for some positions that seemed automatic. So what has happened in this country? Is the vitriol we’ve heard for the past 16 months from this man truly representative of the majority? I don’t know what I fear most: Trump’s selection of a supreme court justice whose nomination is all but assured; the fact that Mike Pence is a heartbeat away from the presidency; or the fact that the stock market is slumping with the news of this election. The latter is so personal since it is what we have literally “banked” the quality of our future life together on. The next few months are sure to be torturous with the constant sound bites about the Trump presidency. Giving credence to this man and all he stands for is so distasteful I want to vomit. While it was a very close race, the simple truth may be that Hilary Clinton was the wrong selection for the Democrats: too much baggage for her and a man called Bill. So now we’re supposed to pull ourselves back up, handle whatever the next four years bring during this macabre period, dissect what happened and pick a candidate that can defeat Trump in 2020. Will that person be a woman - I doubt it. I doubt I will ever see a woman elected in my lifetime. While I may seemed resigned — and at this moment, quite honestly I am — the question before me and many, many others is “what do we do now?” Dialogue must follow and I hope that a positive direction or discovery can emerge to give hope back to us all.
